How Do You Prepare For Meetings Where You Want A Commitment?
Gaining commitment is where most sales conversations quietly break down.
Not because buyers say no.
But because salespeople ask for commitment without preparing for it.
Let me ask you a few honest questions
Do you:
- follow your sales process step by step?
- assume the next commitment based on where you think the opportunity is?
- rely on closing techniques to “move the deal forward”?
And here’s the uncomfortable one:
Is your sales process driving what commitment you ask for —
or is the buyer’s thinking actually leading the conversation?
Most salespeople prepare:
- what they want to say
- what solution they want to propose
- what next step they want to secure
Very few prepare for:
- what the buyer needs to see
- what they need to understand
- what needs to feel clear and safe before committing
So when the buyer hesitates, we label it as:
“Lack of urgency”
“Stuck opportunity”
“Decision paralysis”
But what if the issue isn’t the buyer at all?
What if the commitment you’re asking for simply doesn’t fit:
- their stage of thinking
- their level of confidence
- the clarity you’ve created so far
Before the next meeting, ask yourself:
Should I prepare differently if my goal is to gain commitment — not just agreement?
Commitment is the result of good communication — not a closing technique.
If this sounds uncomfortably familiar, it might be time for a different conversation.
In 2026, sales teams don’t need more techniques — they need modern selling skills.
